Overview of The Equus Survival Trust's Equine Conservation List:

First and foremost, an EST listing must have historical significance, be unique as a landrace or breed, have a viable breeding population in North America, and qualify under one or more combinations listed in the Classification Glossary below.

EVALUATING GLOBAL STATUS CRITERIA:
There is no one-size-fits all in determining Global Status. The numbers and categories below are for reference. They are not used to automatically declare a Global Status. It is not enough to look at the size of a population or the # of mares. To truly assess the status of a breed, one must look at many factors. The increase, decrease, or status quo of a Global Status is affected by the stability or flux of the:
    a) size, genetic diversity & health, and distribution of global and regional populations, & the trends in annual births
    b) existence, quality, and reciprocation status (or lack thereof) of breed societies and support groups
    c) quality of networking between breeders, and the quality of breeder relations with breed organizations
    d) appropriate marketing support (or lack thereof) for effective preservation of traditional traits
    e) Genetic game-changers: such as outside improvement programs, purebred grading-up schemes and/or inspections
